College Literacy

Dear College Literacy Division Members,

My name is Dianna Sand, and I was elected Chair of the ALER College Literacy Division (CLD).  I wanted to say hello, introduce the new CLD leadership team, and give you a heads-up on some important dates.

But first, please join me in acknowledging and thanking Tim Morrison and Ellen Kaiden for their dedicated service and tireless efforts in making the CLD an excellent division.  As you know, Tim served as the previous Chair of the CLD, and Ellen served as Chair of our Idea Exchange for 19 years.  Let’s also extend many thanks and much praise to the past chairs and leadership teams who have helped make the CLD meeting, with its long-standing conference traditions, something we all look forward to each year.  Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make our 2017 ALER CLD meeting successful.  Beginning November 3, 2017, your new leadership team is:

·       Chair: Dianna Sand

·       Chair-Elect: Debra Coffey

·       Secretary: Michelle Rosen

·       Idea Exchange Co-Chairs: Vicki Collett & Wally Thompson

At our meeting, we had over 30 people in attendance.  Our Idea Exchange boasted 14 presentations that spanned many significant topics for college literacy.  I hope you walked away from the presentations with ideas for further research and practical applications in your college classrooms.  If you were not able to attend this year, I hope you will consider submitting a proposal and attending next year’s meeting and Idea Exchange.  More information on proposal submissions will be available in early 2018.

The CLD congratulates the ALER award winners in all categories and especially acknowledges dissertation award winner, Dr. Elizabeth Bemiss, who attended our meeting.

Finally, the Journal of Literacy Research and Instruction (LRI) will publish a special issue on College Literacy.  The CLD applauds the LRI editorial team for highlighting college literacy at the national level.  Please support this effort in whatever way you can (submissions or reviews).  Submit manuscripts by June 1, 2018.  Also, for new scholars, please consider the LRI Emerging Scholar Series.  This series has an ongoing submission date.  Find submission guidelines on the Literacy Research and Instruction page from the ALER website.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the College Literacy Division.
