2020 Conference Update

Educate to Liberate

Conference Chair: Tammy C. Francis

Conference Co-Chair: Robin M. Johnson

Educate to liberate ourselves and others, particularly the students we serve. Education is an opportunity to empower students with different backgrounds. Educate to liberate means including the voices of those we serve in the conversation and challenging dominant paradigms. It is about validating our students’ experiences and perspectives. Students should investigate the world and critically think about it in way that informs how they navigate the world and impact change in the world.  The 2020 Conference will explore ways to empower students and teachers to take initiative, solve problems, and formulate ideas while developing skills in language, learning, and leadership.

Proposal Due Date

Proposal submissions will be due March 9, 2020. The submission link will be available soon. Stay tuned…

General Information

The Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER) is devoted to fostering and promoting teaching and learning processes related to literacy at all levels. Members and other individuals are invited to submit proposals for symposia, sessions, roundtables, and workshops. In addition, master’s and doctoral students are invited to submit proposals for a special digital poster session that will highlight graduate student work. Only original work not published or presented elsewhere may be submitted as proposals for presentation at the conference.

The Program Committee invites proposals from teachers, professors, graduate students, and other professionals interested in literacy education. Membership in ALER is not a prerequisite for submitting proposals or attending the conference. All presenters and participants, however, are required to register for the conference. Program presenters do not receive honorariums and are expected to pay their own registration, housing, meals, and related expenses.

We are gearing up for this year’s conference, so expect some exciting announcements over the next several weeks!

We encourage the continuing improvement of college and university curricula and assist preparation programs for teachers and reading specialists. Our members work at the forefront of policy, pedagogy and practice.  Further, we encourage the continuing improvement of administrative, clinical, diagnostic and instructional practices related to the learning process.
