Proposal Due Date and Submission Instructions

 

  • The proposal submission must be submitted on-line by midnight, March 5, 2017 (No paper submission).  
  • Please submit proposals here  (there is a printable version of this call, including a proposal planning form, at the bottom of this page).  
  • When you click the link above, you will be directed to an external proposal review site (xcdsystem). When the window opens, you will create an account with a username and password. Please retain this information; it is not available through the ALER Website.  These are two separate entities.  General Information

 

The Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER) is devoted to fostering and promoting teaching and learning processes related to literacy at all levels. Members and other individuals are invited to submit proposals for symposiums, sessions, roundtables, and workshops. In addition, master’s and doctoral students are invited to submit proposals for a special poster session that will highlight graduate student work. Only original work not published or presented elsewhere may be submitted as proposals for presentation at the conference.

 

The Program Committee invites proposals from professors, teachers, graduate students, and other professionals interested in literacy education. Membership in ALER is not a prerequisite for submitting proposals or attending the conference. All presenters and participants, however, are required to register for the conference. Program presenters do not receive honorariums and are expected to pay their own registration, housing, meals, and related expenses.

 

Review of Proposals

 

All proposals will receive a blind review by members of the Program Committee. Each proposal will be evaluated for its significance, research design (if appropriate), thoroughness, clarity, and appropriateness for the type of presentation proposal. Factors that tend to disqualify proposals are failure to complete the proposal according to guidelines, the promotion of commercial materials or programs, or topics that are unrelated to reading or literacy.

 

Each individual who submits a proposal will be notified of the Program Committee’s decision by June 2017. If additional individuals appear on the program proposal, it is the responsibility of the person submitting the proposal to inform these individuals of the final disposition of the proposal.

 

 

Types of Presentations

 

Symposiums: The symposium format allows for considerable topic coverage within a strong, unifying theme. Several presenters, a discussant(s), as well as an opportunity for audience participation are expected. A variety of formats for symposia are possible. Time allotment: 80 minutes

 

Sessions: There are three types of sessions: 1) conceptual theoretical paper presentations, 2) instructional paper presentations, and 3) research reports. These presentations and reports are generally focused on a single topic. A few minutes should also be included for audience questions. Time allotment: 25 minutes

 

Workshops: Workshops are designed to provide participants with activities or materials that foster active involvement. While one or more of the workshop leaders may present information, provide examples, and the like, the goal of a workshop is active audience participation. Time allotment: 50 or 80 minutes

 

Roundtables: Roundtables allow for a brief presentation of content followed by discussion and feedback in an informal, conversational environment. Several roundtables may occur at the same time, in the same room. Time allotment: 25 minutes

 

NEW Graduate Student Poster Session: The graduate student poster session is an opportunity for master’s and doctoral students to showcase their work and interact with scholars and researchers. Time allotment: 50 minutes

 

The Program Chair and Program Committee reserve the right to reject incomplete or late proposals.
