A.B. Herr Award

This annual award (begun in 1972) is presented for distinguished service in reading. It recognizes a professional educator who has made outstanding contributions to the field of reading. This award is determined by an Awards Committee chaired by the Past President of ALER. The winner is given an engraved plaque.

ALER Laureate Award

This annual award (begun in 1996) recognizes a ALER member and is based on the following criteria: 1) Influence on other reading professionals through mentoring, teaching, and other activities, 2) Longevity of membership in ALER, 3) Research, publications, and presentations that involve collaboration with students, teachers, and other professionals, and 4) Participation in ALER conferences/activities such as serving on the Board of Directors and/or on commissions/committees (conference registration provided). This award is determined by an Awards Committee chaired by the Past President of ALER. This person speaks at the J. Estill Alexander Forum for Leaders in Literacy at the conference and receives an engraved plaque.

Future Leaders in Literacy Award

This annual award (renamed in 2001 when Estill passed away, formerly the Leaders in Literacy Award) recognizes the mentoring provided by Estill to his many students and the outstanding research conducted by current students. It provides a scholarship, complimentary conference registration, a plaque, and one year ALER membership for the Dissertation Award ($300.00 and $500.00 for travel) and Master’s Research Paper Award ($200.00 and $500.00 for travel). Awardees make presentations at the conference. These awards are determined by the ALER Research Committee. Nomination materials for the J. Estill Alexander Future Leaders in Literacy Awards should be sent to the Chair/s of the Research Committee.

The Jerry Johns Promising Researcher Award

This annual award (begun in 2007) was established by Jerry Johns and ALER to honor and support research by a junior ALER member whose work is beyond the dissertation stage. The award of $500.00 recognizes research that addresses significant questions for reading/literacy and extends understanding of its development, assessment, and/or instruction from early childhood to adult level. An applicant must be nominated by a ALER member, and should be a junior-level researcher (Assistant Professor in the first five years after initial appointment). This award is determined by an Awards Committee chaired by the Past President of ALER. Application forms are available here.

The Judy Richardson Literacy as a Living Legacy Award

This annual award (begun in 2003) is made to an ALER member to support a literacy-related project related to an existing need in a community or school that typically is not supported by other public or private funds. The award of $500.00 supports projects that support work in early childhood through adult literacy. This award is determined by an Awards Committee chaired by the Past President of ALER.
